Saugus High School is an American public secondary schoollocated in the Santa Clarita, Californiacommunity of Saugus, California,and part of the William S. Hart Union High School District. BillBolde currently acts as Saugus’principal, with Diane Hamburger, Martha Spansel, and Rich Bahr, as assistantprincipals.

Facilities

Saugus' campus isbuilt on a hill, with a leveled upper and lower campus and a sloped quad inbetween the two campuses. The A, B, C, D, E, F, and G buildings are located onthe lower campus. Generally speaking, elective classes are located on the lowercampus. The theater arts, choir, and band classes are housed in building E. TheASB is housed in the A building, art and ceramics classes in the B building,computer and business classes in the C building. Video, wood, auto shop, andother elective classes are in the D building. Some core classes are scatteredthroughout the lower campus nonetheless.

The uppercampus is larger than lower campus and houses teachers that teach core subjects.If a teacher also teaches an elective alongside their core class, that electiveclass will be located here. It houses the H, J, K, L, M, P, Q, R, S LectureHall, and X buildings. In buildings H, K, and Q are English classes (althoughsome English classes are scattered in the L, P, and A buildings due to a lackof space). In building J is the math department, in L are social studiesclasses, in M is the world language department, in P and R are history classes,and in the S building is the S lecture hall.

Thetwo-story Y building is located on both upper and lower campus, with theoffices portion on the first floor, lower campus portion and the librarylocated on the second story in the upper campus.

One canenter Saugusthrough a number of different ways. The main entrance is at Centurion Colonnadelocated between the Y and A buildings in lower campus. Other lower campusentrances include the student parking lot D gate, auto compound gate,basketball courts gate, and the gate located towards the end of the footballfield. There are two entrances on the upper campus. The "driveway" islocated behind the K and J buildings, leading up to Centurion Way.

Saugus'renovations were completed in September 2007. There were many renovations tothe school including: The new X building, the football field, the gym, theamphitheater, the refurbishing of the A, B, C, E, F, H, J, L, K, Q, M, P. R,and S buildings, a new cafeteria, a new Student Store, ASB Office, Library andAdministration building. During the modernization, the D classroom building inthe lower campus and the W weight room building next to the field were notaltered, except for the new exterior paint the D building got to match theschool's new and modern look. During the summer of 2011, the D building will gothrough extensive renovation in order to modernize the current electives up totoday's standards. Room D5 which houses video production, and TV production(SNN) will expand and receive a new television studio. Wood shop and the autocompound will also receive new equipment and expand their size.

Curriculum

Saugus high runson a traditional schedule. There are seven class periods per day, the firstperiod beginning at 6:55 am. Each class period is 57 minutes long except forWednesdays when first period starts at 8:55 and each class is 41 minutes forteacher collaboration. Saugusoffers basic courses as well as many Honors and AP courses. AFJROTC is offeredas well to students in grades 9-12.

Sports

Hart High School, Canyon High School, and ValenciaHigh School are Saugus'main rivals. Two new schools, Golden ValleyHigh School and West Ranch High School, are quickly forging heatedrivalries with the school, making for a total of six rival high schools in theSanta Clarita Valley. The school colors are the blue and the silver and theteams are called the Centurions.

Saugus High School's football team, long overshadowed bysurrounding high schools Hart, Canyon, and Valencia, had a turnaround seasonin 2006, in which they made it into the second game of play-offs. The footballteam's talent continued as the Centurions advanced to the semi-finals of theCIF Southern Section championship in the 2007 season. The team was ousted bySt. Bonaventure High School on December 1, 2007 at a score of 55-36.

Saugus HighSchool Football won the Foothill League Championship in the 2008 season, thefirst time the school has ever won it.

Saugus' girlscross country team competes on a national level. The team took first in theCalifornia State Division 1 in2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 finishing second overall in the Nike Nationalscompetition the latter year.

[Activities

Saugus has anaward winning marching band program. The Saugus High School Marching Band, ledand directed by Robert Gibson. They have been invited to SCSBOA championshipsseven consecutive years, attending every year since its inception, placing 7th,3rd, 10th, 7th, 8th and 2nd out of ten finalists for Southern California intheir division (Saugushas varied between the 2A and 3A divisions). In SCSBOA championshipcompetition for the 3Adivision in 2007, Saugustook 2nd in band, 4th in percussion, and 4th in auxiliary (Color Guard). Inaddition, they received a caption award for High General Effect. In 2008, theirfield show entitled "Night watch" took the third place prize in band,and the second place in cologuard.

Saugus ColorGuard 2009 won 1st place at the WGASC Championships for their show That's Life!

SaugusHigh's award winning dance team has won national championship titles sixconsecutive years at the United Spirit Association (USA) Dance/DrillCompetition held in Anaheim, California.

Saugus has astrong Speech and Debate team that regularly attends competitive tournamentsthroughout the league.

Saugus has a dailytelevision news network, SNN (Saugus News Network) that presents the morningannouncements and adds a little humor to them in the process. Saugus has its own Chinese foreign languageclass as part of a Chinese student exchange program.

The Swordand Shield, Saugus'yearbook, has always garnered critical recognition from the yearbook community.Under the direction of current yearbook adviser, Christina Tolisano, the pastthree editions, Shades of Blue, TypeS, and Fine Lines, have received multipleawards from the CSPA and ASA.

Saugus hasdeveloped a stellar choral music program. Under the direction of April Dooley,the program has expanded to four auditioned choirs: Concert Choir, Jazz Choir,Women's Ensemble, and Show Choir. These prestigious choirs consistently earnaccolades: in 2008, Concert Choir was ranked third in the state of California, and traveled on tour to New York City at St. Bartholomew's church, at Ground Zero, and at thefamous Lincoln Center. In 2010, Concert Choir wasranked first at the Festival of Gold in Anehiem, CA. 2008 also marks the firstyear that Women's Ensemble has been accepted into the esteemed Festival of Goldin San Diego,and the first year that Jazz Choir will travel and compete in the illustriousReno Jazz Festival.

In 2001Saugus High started the Gay and Lesbian Alliance as a safe place for studentsto express themselves.

AdvancedPlacement (AP) classes are offered in the following subjects: English Languageand Composition, English Literature, Government, US History, European History,World History, Human Geography, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology,Physics, Calculus AB,Calculus BC,Statistics, Art History, Studio Art, Spanish Language, French, and Chinese.

  • Saugus High School was built on the site of a former dairy farm and was early on known as Cow Pie High.
  • Saugus High School was the site location for the fictional Hubert H. Humphrey High setting of the 1990 movie Pump Up The Volume.
  • According to Principal Bill Bolde, Saugus High has the largest campus in the WIlliam S. Hart Union High School District.
  • Saugus High School was turned into a evacuation center during the Buckweed fire in October 2007.
  • In 1999 Saugus High was host to a bomb scare. The "bomb" was a misguided students electronics project that was left behind in the quad.
  • In 2009 Saugus High started the GDFB club, which later was canceled.
